BLOODY BEAUTY! The Olympics are back!

I am a sports junky! If fly racing was commentated, I would be listening and select my favourite fly.

I write this newsletter sitting on my couch that we bought from the Sydney Olympics. It came from the athlete’s village. I have often wondered whether this couch supported gold medal butts. Moreover, was it the venue where two of the world’s best athletes did what you do when very healthy, attractive young people do when they get together. I refuse to part with this couch, as the Olympics represent so much. To me, the Olympics prove that old things are not all bad and represents what it takes to be the best.

The first recorded Olympics was in 776 BCE. In ancient times, the Olympics were held in the shadow of Mount Olympus. It was a very different games: It was only men, and everyone participated naked. No wonder it was only conducted in summer.

The games are steeped in Greek mythology. The Marathon represents the distance from the plains of Marathon to Athens, the distance that Polonius ran in 490 BCE to tell the Athenians that the Persians were defeated. The race has never been changed in distance.

The games disappeared and was revived by Baron De Cublican.  Again, the first games were based in Greece before they were exported around the world. They are modern, but they still represent the best athletes in the world coming together to compete.

All those athletes have a different storey, but the pillars of success rarely change. The people who win start with natural talent, but are accompanied with hard work, great coaching and a mind set to be the best. It is the ultimate human victory, where hard work and great attitudes create success.

It isn’t any different for business! You have to have skills! You have to work bloody hard! You need great coaching! And you need to want to succeed. You must do it all, not part of it. There is little doubt that hard work with the right mind set will lead to achievement.

We can learn from these champion humans. They firstly achieve by getting there, and then they have to win among the greatest peers. Whilst we cheer for the gold, remember that those who have made it to the games are still champions. Because if they weren’t, they wouldn’t be there. I should know, I was once a Paralympian. I didn’t achieve my dreams, but the lessons learnt are the foundations of my life.

I intend to watch everything! Be true blue! Sing the national anthem! Most of all, marvel at special talent.

Enjoy everyone. If you can’t, let us!
